It was painting that inspired the more general idea of creating works of art at every opportunity. An artist sees something with his (or her) mind's eye and creates it physically as a piece of work, always striving in the process to make the work more and more aesthetically pleasing, until (hopefully) a kind of jewel-like purity is achieved. I think of this as always trying to make the best of things. So, if an artist can make -- or paint -- anything, what should selected as a worthy subject? I paint what inspires me, what demands to be painted, given my personal experience, and I try to keep my mind's eye open and on the watch for inspiring subjects. I received a bachelor's degree from University of California at Berkeley, majoring in philosophy, class of 1968. I withdrew from graduate school there the next year and moved north to British Columbia, Canada with wife, Mary. After six years of living in Vancouver and working in construction in the Gastown area, and saving some money, we bought some land in Bella Coola Valley on the central coast of B.C. where we built our home. We have lived here on the edge of the wilderness for 25 years, raising a couple children, building, painting, and making some tiles. I am fortunate to have achieved my dream of living in a beautiful home in a beautiful setting, making beautiful things.
